Congress Emerges Victorious In Karnataka Urban Local Body Polls

Congress Emerges Victorious In Karnataka Urban Local Body Polls. (Representational)

Bengaluru: As the counting for Karnataka Urban Local Body polls concluded, Congress State President DK Shivakumar expressed happiness as his party won by gaining seven out of ten Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

In a tweet, he said, “Congress has won 7 out of the 10 Urban Local Bodies that went to polls. BJP has won only 1. I thank the people of Karnataka for placing their confidence in the Congress Party and punishing the BJP for its misrule. Overall, Congress won 119 seats, while BJP won just 56 and JD(S) 67.”

Mr Shivakumar further urged Karnataka Congress party workers and leaders not to celebrate in any way and continue assisting people the best they can in this national health emergency.

“This is not a time to celebrate victory but to reaffirm our commitment to serve the people during these difficult times. I request Karnataka Congress party workers and leaders not to celebrate in any way and continue assisting people the best they can in this national health emergency”, read the tweet.

Siddaramaiah, Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, has thanked the voters who led the Congress party’s grandeur in the elections to the local bodies.

“The result of this election is clear as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is ruling the state, has lost its referendum in times of hardship like corona, the government is playing with people’s lives. Thus people have given a lesson to the BJP,” he said.

Siddaramaiah suggested Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa in his statement to dissolve the government. He congratulated the party candidates who have won the election.

Siddaramaiah has said that the victorious candidates will act in a way that is not unwarranted by the expectation of the blessed voters.

The elections for the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) were held on Tuesday and the counting of votes was completed today. Out of the 10 Urban Local Bodies, Congress won 7, Bharatiya Janata Party has won one body poll and Janata Dal (Secular) (JDS) has won two.

Yogi Adityanath Replaces His Team-11 With Team-9 For Covid Management

20 oxygen concentrators should be made available at each community health centre: Yogi Adityanath

Lucknow: Amid a surge in coronavirus cases, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday replaced his “Team-11”, a group of officials tasked with managing the crises, with a new nine-member set of ministers and bureaucrats.

Opposition parties have been slamming Yogi Adityanath and Team-11 for their alleged failure to control the pandemic in the country’s most populous state.

The Chief Minister was also accused of relying too much on bureaucrats, an allegation levelled also by an MLA from the ruling BJP itself.

“Chief Minister Adityanath’s experiment to control the COVID pandemic with the help of the bureaucracy has failed,” Bairia MLA Surendra Singh told reporters on Friday.

He said the system should centre around elected representatives and not the bureaucracy.

Unlike Team-11, the new group called “Team- 9” also has two ministers. The nine members head their own committees or departments involved in fighting the pandemic.

“The CM has constituted a new Team-9 for effective management of COVID-19 and related work. This team will directly report to the CM and carry out important work in different fields,” a government spokesperson said.

It will take policy decisions and ensure their implementation, giving reports directly to the chief minister, he said.

The members include the state’s Medical Education Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna, whose group will work on vaccinations, and the availability of hospital beds and human resources.

Health Minister Hitesh Chandra Awasthi will head the group on testing, increasing health facilities and home isolation of patients.

Chief Secretary RK Tiwari’s team will coordinate with the centre.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) will focus on the availability of oxygen. The Director General of Police will work on the implementation of COVID-19 restrictions.

ACS (Revenue) will oversee management of migrants coming from other states. ACS (Rural Development and Panchayati Raj) is tasked with sanitisation, cleanliness and monitoring of vigilance committees.

Agricultural Production Commissioner, Industrial and Infrastructure Development Commissioner and ACS (Information) are other members of the new team.

At Friday’s meeting, Yogi Adityanath directed that 20 oxygen concentrators should be made available at each community health centre.

He said the supply and demand of anti-viral drug Remdesivir should be monitored by the district magistrates, according to the official spokesperson.

The Chief Minister said there should be no online classes till May in schools, which are now closed.

On Friday, the state recorded 332 coronavirus deaths, its biggest single-day spike, while 34,626 new cases were reported.

While the Chief Minister has claimed in the past that there is no oxygen shortage in the state, reports indicate that in many places people are scrambling for oxygen cylinders or beds in hospitals.

SL vs BAN, 2nd Test Day 2: Taskin Ahmed Takes Three As Sri Lanka Reach 469 For 6 | Cricket News

Bangladesh paceman Taskin Ahmed took 3 wickets for 119 on Day Two of the second Test against Sri Lanka Friday as the hosts piled up 469 runs for 6 at Stumps. The 26-year-old had an impressive morning spell where his four overs cost just seven runs and produced two wickets. He removed centurion Lahiru Thirimanne for 140 runs and Angelo Mathews (5) in quick succession. After lunch, Taskin bowled Pathum Nissanka with a delivery that kept low and in the very next over, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam dismissed Oshada Fernando who was on 81.

From 382 for 6, Ramesh Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella added 87 runs for the seventh wicket.

Taskin was denied a fourth wicket when Najmul Shanto put down Ramesh Mendis at second slip.

Playing just his seventh Test, Taskin generated good pace and troubled the right-handed batsmen by swinging the ball away from them.

After conceding 291 runs for a solitary wicket on Day One, Sri Lanka found it tougher on Friday, scoring only 43 runs in 26 overs in the morning session while losing three wickets.

Dickwella played a key role in the final stand, bringing up his half-century in just 48 balls. He was on 64 at Stumps while Mendis was 22 not out.

Play was suspended for 24 minutes after Tea due to bad light and although the players were back on the field, only 6.5 overs were possible before the day ended. 25 overs were lost in all.

The first Test ended in a tame draw with ICC Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle giving the pitch a below average rating and a demerit point.

Vaccination For 18+ In Mumbai At These 5 Centres From Tomorrow

div id=”ins_storybody”><!–

Coronavirus: COVID-19 cases have been rising in India

Mumbai: COVID-19 vaccination for the age group 18-44 in Mumbai will be done at five centres on Saturday, the city’s municipal body said.

These centres are Nair Hospital, BKC Jumbo Facility, Cooper Hospital, Seven Hills Hospital and Rajawadi Hospital, additional municipal commissioner (health) Suresh Kakani said.

He said at least 20,000 doses of vaccines are available for the age group 18-44.

Only those who are in this age group will be vaccinated on Saturday and Sunday, while those who are above 45 will be vaccinated whenever new vaccine stocks arrive.

The officer said only registered people, and not walk-ins, will be allowed for vaccination.

Many states have said they won’t be able to start vaccinating this age group from Saturday due to vaccine shortage.

The centre has said any new exercise takes time to pick up pace and this phase of the vaccination drive too will stabilise over time.

Delhi, Odisha, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab are some of the states that have said they don’t have adequate doses of vaccines.

Joint Secretary in the Health Ministry Lav Agarwal said the states are coordinating with vaccine manufacturers for procuring the doses and the centre is supporting them.

“Vaccination will be launched tomorrow in some states which have already coordinated with manufacturers. Any new exercises or process takes time to pick up pace and gradually more centres will be increased. The programme will stabilise in some time,” he said.

From tomorrow, the types of anti-coronavirus vaccines and their prices will be displayed on the CoWIN portal for people to make an informed choice at the time of booking an appointment at a private vaccination centre, according to the Liberalised Pricing and Accelerated National COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy document.

PBKS vs RCB Indian Premier League 2021: KL Rahul, Harpreet Brar Power Punjab Kings To 34-Run Victory vs Royal Challengers Bangalore | Cricket News

Skipper KL Rahul scored a combative 91 while Harpreet Brar accounted for three key batsmen as Punjab Kings (PBKS) thumped Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 34 runs in an IPL match, in Ahmedabad on Friday. Put into bat, PBKS were in a spot of bother at one stage but Rahul’s perseverance, power-hitting of Chris Gayle (46) and energy of Brar (25) ensured they had a competitive 179 for five on board. Rahul and Gayle shared a 80-run stand but PBKS’s middle order collapsed as Brar, batting at number seven, was the only other batsman to manage a double-digit score.

Rahul and Brar then added 61 runs for the unbeaten eighth wicket to rescue the side after the RCB bowlers had seized the initiative following Gayle’s dismissal in the 11th over.

Rahul hit seven fours and five sixes in his 57-ball knock, while Brar took 17 balls for his 25 that had two sixes and a four. Brar (3/19) then returned with ball in his hand to dismiss key rival batsmen Virat Kohli (35), Glenn Maxwell (0) and AB de Villiers (3) as RCB managed 145 for eight.

The win took PBKS (6) to fifth place behind Mumbai Indians (MI) (6) in the points table from the sixth place, while RCB (10) remained at number three.

The fiery spells from Riley Meredith (1/29) and Mohammed Shami (1/28) meant that RCB were off to a sedate start as they could score only 36 runs from the Powerplay overs.

The 24-year-old Australian pacer consistently tested the RCB openers and eventually uprooted the stumps of Devdutt Padikkal (7) after being hit for a six on a mis-timed shot by the left-hander.

Kohli, who was hit on his right elbow by compatriot Shami, and Rajat Patidar kept the scoreboard ticking as shot-making was not easy against the disciplined PBKS bowlers.

At half-way mark, RCB were just 62 for two and to make matter worse, left-arm spinner Brar clean bowled Kohli and Maxwell off successive deliveries in the 11th over.

The PBKS bowler returned and sent back dangerous De Villiers (3) to leave RCB gasping at 69 for four in 12.1 overs. From there onwards, it stopped being a contest as the required run-rate kept soaring.

Earlier, the pace duo of Daniel Sams and Mohammed Siraj bowled tight spells initially to keep the PBKS batsmen on a tight leash, not letting them open their arms.

Prabhsimran Singh, who played in place of injured Mayank Agarwal, could not contribute much, scoring a-run-a-ball 7.

Rahul looked in good touch, driving the ball elegantly but runs did not come at a good pace for the side until Gayle exploded.

The West Indian creamed five fours, including four in a row, in the last over of the Powerplay, bowled by Jamieson. He followed that up with two sixes off Yuzvendra Chahal in the next over with the first one being a flat maximum.

Runs came thick and fast, boosting the run rate but Gayle could not convert that into a big knock. Jamieson got rid of the Caribbean marauder, getting him caught behind. It was a soft dismissal as the sharp short ball touched Gayle’s gloves and reached into the hands of AB de Villiers.

The tall Kiwi bowler also got rid of Nicholas Pooran (0) while Deepak Hooda (5) and Shahrukh Khan (0) also made their way back to pavilion in a jiffy.

Rahul, who was losing one partner after another, completed his half-century with a single as big shots dried up again. The last over fetched PBKS 22 runs with Rahul hitting Harshal Patel for two fours and a six before Brar closed the innings with another six.

Zimbabwe vs Pakistan 1st Test, Day 2: Fawad Alam Century Puts Pakistan On Top vs Zimbabwe | Cricket News

Fawad Alam notched his fourth Test hundred as Pakistan built an imposing first innings lead over Zimbabwe on the second day of the first Test in Harare on Friday. Alam’s unbeaten 108, along with Imran Butt’s painstaking 91 earlier in the day, guided Pakistan to 374-6 at the close, giving them a lead of 198 over Zimbabwe’s first innings total of 176. Hasan Ali was the other unbeaten batsman with 21 on a day that saw the Pakistan batsmen struggling in the morning — they scored just 59 from 32 overs — before accelerating in the next two sessions.

Alam drove Zimbabwe seamer Donald Tiripano for two consecutive boundaries to race from 93 to his century, having remarkably converted each of his Test fifties into three figures.

The 35-year-old left-hander smashed a debut hundred in Sri Lanka in 2009 but was discarded after only two more Test and then had to wait for 10 years and 259 days for his next Test, in England last year.

Fawad has so far batted for 155 balls, hitting 16 boundaries. He added 107 for the fifth wicket with Mohammad Rizwan who made 45.

Alam gave thanks to a higher power for his successful return.

“I was nowhere a few years back, so whatever Almighty has given me I am grateful and this knock is a great satisfaction,” said Alam, adding that the slow pitch made scoring difficult.

“The ball was not coming onto the bat but when they took the new ball scoring became much easier and when I came to bat the platform was set by the openers,” he said.

While Alam made the most of his opportunity, opener Butt missed out on a maiden Test century by just nine runs.

Others amongst runs were Abid Ali 60 and Azhar Ali 36.

Zimbabwe’s best bowler Donald Tiripano, who has figures of 3-89, had already derailed Pakistan with a double strike in the post-lunch session with the wickets of Azhar and Babar Azam.

The Pakistan captain Azam drove Tiripano firmly to Roy Kaia at a unorthodox short mid-on to record his first ever golden duck in Test cricket.

Butt became fast bowler Richard Ngarava’s first wicket in Tests, caught behind after hitting seven boundaries in an obdurate 236-ball stay.

Snail-pace morning

Resuming on 103 without loss, the Pakistan openers struggled early on as the Zimbabwe bowlers kept tight line and length.

Butt, playing his third Test, and Abid could add only 10 runs in the opening 10 overs — eight of the first 14 overs were maidens. The first boundary only arrived in the 18th over of the morning.

With the introduction of Tendai Chisoro’s left-arm spin, Abid retreated into his shell completely before an attempted drive found the edge of the bat.

Brendan Taylor juggled the chance at slip before pouching it to end Abid’s innings, which last 140 balls and included 10 fours, and an opening partnership of 115.

The second Test is also in Harare, from May 7.

Russia Detains Kremlin Critic’s’s Lawyer On Criminal Charges

Ivan Pavlov is defending Alexei Navalny’s network of regional offices.

Moscow: Russian police on Friday detained prominent rights lawyer Ivan Pavlov — who is representing jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny — on criminal charges, his organisation said.

Team 29 said on its website that Pavlov is facing charges of disclosing information about a preliminary investigation in the case of former journalist Ivan Safronov.

The offence is punishable by up to three months in jail.

“The head of Team 29, Ivan Pavlov, has been detained after a search in Moscow,” the organisation wrote.

The Saint Petersburg-based group describes itself as an association of lawyers and journalists fighting for freedom of speech in Russia, where it is known for defending people accused of treason.

The organisation is named after Article 29 of Russia’s constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech, and chapter 29 of the country’s criminal code, which defines crimes against the state including treason and espionage.

Pavlov is defending Navalny’s network of regional offices and his Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) after prosecutors requested this month to designate them as extremist, equating them with the likes of the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda and banning them in Russia.

Pavlov is also handling the case of former journalist Ivan Safronov, who was arrested last July on treason charges and is accused of passing state secrets to Czech intelligence.

His pre-trial detention was extended until July during a court hearing on Friday.

Pavlov told reporters Friday that his detention is connected with the Safronov case.

He said his crime was telling reporters earlier that the case included an anonymous witness and handing a newspaper the case files.

Pavlov’s team said that police also conducted searches on Team 29’s Saint Petersburg office and at the home of Pavlov’s wife.

His colleague Yevgeny Smirnov said that Pavlov frequently received threats from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), who allegedly said “we will do everything to put you behind bars”.

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Friday told journalists that he was unaware of the reasons for Pavlov’s detention and that it was not the Kremlin’s “prerogative”.

In an open letter signed by a dozen Russian lawyers, Pavlov’s colleagues said they had “no doubt” the arrest was connected to his work.

“We demand an end to the illegal criminal persecution of lawyers,” they said in the letter published on the website of Ekho Moskvy radio.

“Criminal cases against human rights defenders and lawyers is the new reality we are entering,” opposition movement Open Russia, funded by exiled former oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, wrote on Telegram.

At Least 30 Killed In Car Bomb Blast In Afghanistan

Interior ministry spokesman said that the deaths from Friday’s blast could rise. (Representational)

Kabul: A huge car bomb blast killed at least 30 people and injured dozens more in Afghanistan’s eastern Logar province on Friday evening, with highschool students among the casualties, officials said.

The car packed with explosives detonated in Logar’s capital of Pul-e Alam near the house of the former head of the provincial council, Didar Lawang, the spokesman for Logar’s governor, said.

The house also operated as a guesthouse and the blast had struck just as guests were breaking their fast during the holy Islamic month of Ramadan, according to the head of Logar’s provincial council, Hasibullah Stanekzai.

He said among the casualties were highschool students who had been staying at the house, having travelled to the capital to sit their university entrance exam, as well as pro-government militia members who were staying there while waiting for air transport to another distinct.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the blast. The insurgent Taliban did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Violence in Afghanistan has escalated in recent weeks after U.S. President Joe Biden announced the U.S. would withdraw troops by September 11 to end two decades of foreign military presence.

That decision angered the Taliban who had signed a deal with previous U.S. President Donald Trump that specified troops would be gone from the country by May 1 subject to certain security guarantees.

Interior ministry spokesman Tariq Arian said that the deaths from Friday’s blast could rise.

A provincial health official said just over 60 injured people had been taken to hospital and many students were among the victims.

The European Union’s delegation to Afghanistan condemned the attack.

“In the holy month of Ramadan, horrible news on a car bomb in Pul-e-Alam, Logar province, killing and injuring innocent civilians, including students….this is a tragedy for the whole country,” it said on Twitter.

PBKS vs RCB, Indian Premier League: Fans Hail Harpreet Brar After He Dismisses Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers | Cricket News

IPL 2021: Harpreet Brar dismissed AB de Villiers after having got Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell.© IPL/Twitter

Harpreet Brar played his first match in IPL 2021 on Friday for Punjab Kings and he had a game to remember as he dismissed Royal Challengers Bangalore‘s big three – captain Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers – to effectively nip in the bud RCB’s chances of chasing down Punjab’s 179 in Ahmedabad. These were also Brar’s first three IPL wickets. He started off with the big wicket of Kohli (35), who missed a delivery after having come down the pitch and lost his leg stump.

On the very next delivery, Brar bowled a bail-trimmer, getting Maxwell (0) both bowled and stunned at his dismissal. The hat-trick was averted by de Villiers but he couldn’t keep Brar at bay for long as he was caught by KL Rahul for three.

Fans hailed Brar’s performance and lauded him on dismissing three of the best T20 players in the world, all in the same match.

Brar’s returns helped Punjab run through RCB’s top order and middle order. They went on to win the match by 34 runs.
