Rohit Sharma extended a welcome to the seven players picked by Mumbai Indians (MI), in the player auction for IPL 2021 on Thursday. The MI skipper took to social media platform Instagram, in order to post a video which showed the players with the franchise anthem playing in the background. “Welcome to the city of heroics!” read the caption on the video posted by the 33-year-old. A total sum of Rs 11.70 crore was spent by the defending champions during the course of the player auction.
New Zealand fast-bowler Adam Milne was the first purchase by the Mumbai-based franchise. Milne was signed for a sum of Rs 3.2 crore, joining Trent Boult.
Australian all-rounder Nathan Coulter-Nile who was released by the franchise ahead of the player auction, made a return to the MI squad. Coulter-Nile was added to the squad for a sum of Rs 5 crore.
The defending champions followed these additions up with the purchase of leg-spinner Piyush Chawla. Chawla has picked the third highest number of wickets in the history of the cash-rich league, having accounted for 156 dismissals. The 32-year-old was signed for Rs 3.2 crore.
New Zealand cricketer James Neesham joined Milne and Boult at his base price of Rs 50 lakhs. The all-rounder represented Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in IPL 2020.
All-rounder Yudhvir Charak who was one of the support players in the squad for IPL 2020, was the next signing at his base price of Rs 20 lakhs.
South African left-arm pacer Marco Jansen and Arjun Tendulkar were the final two additions to the squad. Both the players were signed by MI for a sum of Rs 20 lakhs.
Jansen is a left-arm pacer who is capable of chipping in with the bat. Arjun played for Mumbai in the recently concluded edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
